A roadside argument over public urination ended with a 47-year-old trader in Kanpur losing his life.
What began as an objection to people allegedly urinating near a market turned violent when a group of men reportedly attacked him. He suffered serious head injuries, lost consciousness and died two days later while undergoing treatment.
The incident took place in Kanpur's Kakadeo area and was captured on CCTV. Police have registered a case against unidentified people and are working to identify those seen in the footage.

What Happened That Night?
According to police and reports, the incident happened late on Saturday, 5 September, near Om Chauraha in the Kakadeo police station area.
The victim, identified as Amit Gupta by India Today and as Amit Kumar in reports by the Times of India and NDTV, was an auto trader. Reports said he was returning from his shop in Naveen Nagar when he came across four men near the road.
The men were allegedly drinking and one of them began urinating by the roadside.
Gupta reportedly objected and asked them to stop. He pointed out that houses were located opposite the spot.
The objection allegedly angered the group.
According to the reports, the four men surrounded him and began assaulting him. He was knocked to the ground and repeatedly hit, including on the head with bricks and stones, according to police and media reports.

How Did The Crime Unfold?
CCTV footage from the area reportedly captured the assault.
The footage shows the group attacking Gupta after the confrontation. Reports said passers-by attempted to intervene while the assault was taking place.
Gupta eventually lost consciousness on the road. The attackers then fled from the spot. His family was informed and took him to hospital.
Doctors treated him for his injuries, but he did not regain consciousness.
He died at a private hospital on Monday evening, 7 September, around two days after the assault. A post-mortem examination was conducted before his body was handed over to his family.

Who Was Amit Gupta?
Gupta was a 47-year-old auto trader from Kanpur's Naveen Nagar area.
India Today reported that he was one of three brothers and three sisters. His family said his mother had also died only days before the attack.
His wife, Shalini Gupta, and other family members have sought justice and raised concerns about their safety.
Shalini told India Today that the family remained frightened because the alleged attackers had not been arrested. She also expressed concern for the couple's children, who, according to her, were afraid to use the same road where the attack took place.
Why Did The Argument Turn Fatal?
The immediate trigger, according to the accounts available so far, was Gupta's objection to public urination.
The men allegedly took offence at his objection, leading to an argument that escalated into a physical attack.
Police and reports have also said the men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol. This remains part of the reported circumstances of the case, not a finding established by a court.
Public urination can also attract action under laws dealing with public nuisance and local civic offences. The Indian Penal Code, for example, contained provisions dealing with public nuisance, while municipal laws can regulate sanitation and the disposal of waste and other offensive matter. The exact provision applicable depends on the facts and local law.
But the legal status of the alleged urination does not determine the circumstances of the subsequent assault. That is now a separate criminal investigation.

At the time of the latest reports on 9 September, the accused had not been arrested, according to India Today. Police registered the case against unidentified persons and were examining CCTV footage to establish the identities of those involved.
